Hydrate

   I try to remind all of my clients to "drink plenty of water" before you leave my office. It is very important in helping the kidneys and other organs to process the various substances which move through the body (with and without massage). A lot of toxins are being released so you need to flush them out and rehydrate your body.

   The most important glass of water (sorry coffee/tea  doesn't count) is first thing in the morning. It helps boost your metabolism. Water is the most important nutrient for health, growth, and development. Water plays a very important role in energy transformation. 

    Muscles are 70% water: your brain is 85% water. Drink more water and you will feel and see the difference in your body's health.

I don't know about you, but it seemed like April just flew by, here's hoping April showers bring some May flowers....and some warm weather :)

 

Something that we all experience is Stress. It can be a factor in your health and happiness. Stress is defined as any one thing that threatens homeostasis and can cause the body to adapt. External temperatures, physical exertion, how much water you intake, changes in your diet or even positive excitement all could cause an increased secretion of cortisol by the adrenal cortex.

   Stress affects every body system on some level. These include the *Cardiovascular system - stress contributes to an elevated blood pressure and triggering cardiovascular pathologies

*Digestive system - may cause stomachache, nausea, or diarrhea

*Endocrine system- may cause imbalances in powerful hormones that help regulate body functions

*Lymphatic and immune system - can make you more susceptible to catching common illnesses and can impair the body's inflammatory responses

*Nervous system - Anxiety! If stress is prolonged, a number of disorders can develop

*Musculoskeletal system - Can cause an increase in muscle tension and lead to chronic tension patterns and postural imbalances

 

I'm sure you know where I'm heading with this topic...Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps the body to unwind and slows the body's heart rate, which in turn is associated with relaxed breathing patterns. Massage is a key stress-management tool that helps the body return to normal homeostasis and optimal function.

PARKING

 I apologize to any of you if you have trouble finding a parking spot. You may park anywhere you find a spot, even in the circle where my office is. On most Sundays you can park right out front in the circle.

Spring Has Sprung....

    Now that another season is upon us, it is a great time to remove all those dead skin cells and get exfoliated. Tips to stay spring-y

Although spring is arriving and it is refreshing to feel some warm air and see bright flowers, April is actually a very stressful month.

Hence, April is also “Stress Awareness Month” – and for very good reason!

In addition to “Tax Day,” businesses tend to gear up for a big spring push before the summer lull, schools are in full-swing with projects and tests, kids sports start competing in earnest and allergy season usually smacks us upside the head with almost no warning.

Here are some ideas for making it easy on you and your clients to get through the busy Spring in one piece so you can relax and enjoy the summer fun!

Exercise

When schedules get busy, one of the first things off the list is exercise. But exercise should actually be at the top because it is one of the main ways our bodies relieve the physical symptoms of stress like fatigue, pain, and moodiness. If you can’t make time for daily workout, try to fit a 5-10 minute walk outside into some part of your day. Or try some of the great new apps for adding a 5- or 7-minute workout at the office, in your yard or in a parking lot!

Meditate

Meditation does not have to be about pretzeled legs, chanting, and reaching enlightenment. It can simply be about a moment of stillness in your mind. Just 60 seconds of meditation can dramatically improve your mood, your productivity and the quality of your day.

Giggle and hum

Both laughter and music can lower the blood pressure. In fact, this study in 2011 showed that three months of laughter or music therapy resulted in the same drop in blood pressure that could be achieved with a low-salt diet, losing 10 pounds, or taking a blood-pressure-lowering medication.

So pop in your favorite 80s dance tunes and show your kids how it used to be done! (we recommend the GoGos, Cyndi Lauper or any of these one-hit wonders) and dance around with your kids – or heck, your co-workers, clients,  – while working in some giggling and humming into your day.

Massage

Regular massage can improve sleep, relieve headaches, reduce muscle pain, and improve moods.

Plus, massage feels good. When you feel good, you play more, work more efficiently, and take better care of the people you love.
